Overview

This article covers the steps to join a macOS device to Active Directory, enable network user login, and connect to a network share.


Configure DNS

1. Open System Settings.

2. Click Network, select the active network connection, then add the domain IP address under DNS settings.

Bind to Active Directory

3. Go back to System Settings and click Users & Groups.

4. Under Network Account Server, click Edit.

5. Click Open Directory Utility…

6. Click the lock icon to unlock configuration changes and enter local administrator credentials.

7. Select Active Directory, enter the AD domain in the field, then click Bind.

8. Enter the username and password when prompted, then click OK.

9. If a dialog appears asking “Join existing account?”, click OK.

10. The domain has now been added.

Allow Users to Log In

11. In Users & Groups, enable Allow network users to log in at login window.

12. Click Options, then click the + button to add a user.

13. Select either Allow network users or Only these network users.

Log In as AD User and Mount the Share

14. Log out of the current user account.

15. Log in as the AD user.

16. Open Finder, click Go in the menu bar, then select Connect to Server.

17. Enter smb:// followed by the IP address or domain and share name.

Example: smb://192.168.1.10/SharedFolder

18. Click Connect, then click Connect again if prompted.
