Surveying Wifi / AP layout
The
number of APs per location depends on the square footage as well as the
structure of the building. For a normal single-level office layout with
drywall and wood, we typically recommend 1 AP for a max of about 2000
sq. ft, or 25 devices, whichever is lower. For a building that uses
masonry or has multiple levels, the number of APs would increase to
provide adequate coverage. Unfortunately the nature of Wi-Fi is that
it's impossible to predict exactly how many APs will be required without
a site survey, which is rather time-consuming. However, we've worked
with partners in the past to provide guidance and recommendations that
have (for the most part) been fairly good.
The
optimal separation between APs for an open-plan office with drywall is
usually about 20-30 feet between APs, but again this depends on the
density of client devices and the material of the walls. Sometimes we've
suggested using outdoor APs inside large offices or warehouses because our
outdoor APs are more powerful and have high gain antennas.
